Diagnosis of Breast Cancer by Katie Couric

Every two minutes, a woman in the US receives a breast cancer diagnosis, Katie Couric wrote on Instagram as she disclosed her June breast cancer diagnosis.

I merged with them on June 21. As #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth draws near, I wanted to share my own experience with you all, encourage you to get checked and let you know that you might be among the women who require more than a mammogram.

In an essay that was posted on her website, the former “Today” and “CBS Evening News” anchor went into more information about her diagnosis. Couric, who underwent breast cancer surgery in July and started radiation treatments on September 7, also mentioned that her sister passed away from pancreatic cancer at the age of 54 and that her first husband, Jay Monahan, passed away from colon cancer at the age of 42. She described having a “suspended animation experience” after learning she had cancer.

My attitude swiftly changed from shock to resignation,” Couric continued. “Why would I be spared given the history of cancer in my family? I switched from asking “Why me?” to “Why not me?”

Four days after learning of her diagnosis, Couric notified her two daughters, saying, “I FaceTimed each of them. I made an effort to be as comforting as Dr. Newman. In shock, their expressions froze. Next, shock. They then started to cry. I tried to reassure them and myself by saying “Don’t worry,” then “I’m going to be alright,” to Carrie and then Ellie. One parent had already passed away. Losing another was an inconceivable thought.
